The
city’s historical centre is dominated by the impressive cathedral
with its pink, white and green marble façade. The Duomo,
designed by the famous Renaissance-architect Brunelleschi, is
the fourth-largest cathedral in the world: it took almost two centuries
to build it, and even then the church’s façade was not completed
until the 19th century. Its interior shows frescoes and stained-glass windows
created by the most famous artists of Renaissance-Tuscany: Vasari,
Zuccari, Donatello, Uccello and Ghiberti.
By
visiting the cupola you’ ll get an insight into how the dome
was so cleverly constructed - without any scaffolding!- and
you’ ll be rewarded by a splendid panoramic view of the city
and the surrounding hills. The cathedral's belfry, the Campanile, was designed by Giotto, while Pisano e della Robbia added the bas-reliefs. The adjacent Baptistry, famous for its gilded bronzen doors, began its history as a pagan temple.
The doors on the south are by Pisano, but it is the doors facing east (in
the direction of the cathedral) that are most talked about. They are also
said the Gates of Paradise, created by Ghiberti who spent almost
forty years of his life, from 1424 to 1452, working on them:
their beauty and sophistication mark them as one of the first products
of the Renaissance. At the Baptistry’s interior you can admire some
beautiful 13th-century mosaics of the Last Judgement. The Duomo Museum (Museo dell'Opera del Duomo) behind the cathedral features the original panels of the Baptistry’s doors, Brunelleschi's death mask, equipment used to build the dome and a beautiful collection of sculptures, including pieces by Michelangelo.
