FLORENCE: SANTA CROCE
Cathedral Square (Duomo) | Piazza Signoria & Palazzo Vecchio | Michelangelo's David (Academy Gallery) | Palazzo Pitti | Uffizi Gallery & Old Bridge (Ponte Vecchio) | Santa Croce | Events and Exhibitions in Florence | San Lorenzo District
A
hundred years ago, after visiting the Church of Santa Croce, Stendhal
almost went mad - and he wasn’ t the only one! Each year about 12
unlucky visitors to Florence are hospitalised for an illness called, after
the French author, “Stendhal’s Disease” ; symptoms
are feelings of culture shock and bedazzlement.
The Santa Croce’s façade, added to the church in the
19th century, is decorated with slabs of green marble. The various chapels
inside hide frescoes by Giotto and della Robbia.
The walls are lined with tombs of famous Florentines, and no less
than 276 tombstones cover the floor: with a little research you’ll
discover the tombs of Machiavelli, Michelangelo and Galileo.Santa
Croce's museum features a crucifix by Cimabue, unfortunately severely
damaged by the 1966 floods.
Near Santa Croce stands the Casa Buonarotti, a house which Michelangelo
owned but never lived in. Today it’s a museum showing a collection
of copies of Michelangelo’s work - you’ ll find the real thing,
however, at the Accademia Gallery:
David in all his glory.
